Dear supporter,   The road to saving the Wedgwood Collection has been a long one, as you may be aware over the last 3 years we have been trying to prevent the forced sale and dispersion of the Wedgwood Collection  - we all agree that to do this would be a travesty. The Collection contains 80,000 works of art, ceramics, manuscripts, and letters, pattern books and photographs covering the 250 year history of Wedgwood; it is a unique archive of British politics, society, science and art. The archive represents priceless evidence of one company's contribution to a world of fast paced commercial innovation, scientific discovery, intellectual enlightenment and turbulent social history.   "The Wedgwood Museum's Collection is a window into the Wedgwood family's business and private life set within the context of the Industrial Revolution. It is, quite simply, one of the most extraordinary and rare Collections of its type in the UK"   Carole Souter, Chief Executive of the Heritage Lottery Fund    The Collection must be saved and must remain in North Staffordshire.   We are delighted to say that good news is here, and we finally have a chance to save the Collection – forever. A steering group, led by the Art Fund with members including the Administrator, Tristram Hunt MP,  Rt. Hon. Ed Vaizey, MP Minister for Culture, Alison Wedgwood, Gaye Blake Roberts, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council have been working behind the scenes for a number of years, and in recent months, after exploring all options the Art Fund have agreed to raise the funds needed to buy the Collection – thereby safeguarding it in perpetuity. The Art Fund is leading the campaign and will buy the Collection and this will then be gifted to the V&A museum. The V&A has the curatorial, legal and business expertise and a remit to the protect the national collection of art and design and so it makes sense for them to own the collection – BUT always with the intention that it remains on display in Staffordshire at the existing Barlaston site. This solution safeguards the Collection in perpetuity and keeps it on display in the local area where it was created and evolved over 250 years.   We need £15.75m to do so, and have already raised over £13m – a major achievement.   However, today marks the beginning of the public appeal to raise the remaining £2.74m needed by 30 November in order to safeguard it.   We therefore are asking any keen supporters to contribute something to ensure we can end the uncertainty and ensure the Collection is saved forever. Thanks to you (and a crash course in Ebay bidding + my credit card), I am
now the very proud and happy owner of a copy of the Wedgwood Pedigrees.
My grandfather and his 5 children (including my father) appear in page 251.
Last year my Aunt (Lucy Beryl, known as Berrie)'s grandson got into
financial difficulties and the bank foreclosed on Burslem Station.
However, the property was then bought out of receivership by my Aunt Katie
Edwina (known as Zeenie)'s great granddaughter and her husband, who already
owned property in the Muttaburra District.

The family connection continued, and they are cleaning up the graves of my
grandfather and grandmother, which are both on the Station - grandfather
because floods prevented his body being taken to Muttaburra for burial, and
grandmother as she wanted to be buried with him.

Dear List,

An original edition of "Wedgwood Pedigrees" (1925) is being sold on Ebay by
an antiquarian bookseller in County Durham. The price is about £15 more than
I paid for a copy some 17 years ago - editions are hard to come by. Since
1925, of course the family tree has been corrected and expanded by others -
particularly Philip Richards - see http://www.familyhistorian.info - however
many may still find it a pleasure to own a copy.

that gentry family formerly of Downe, and son of the naturalist CHARLES
DARWIN and his wife, a scion of the baron
WEDGWOOD) and Maud Haskins (d 1947, dau of Charles Meredith DU PUY (of
Huguenot descent), of Philadelphia, USA). She m 1st 1940 Mark PRYOR (d
1970), having a son and three daus. She m 2nd Charles GURNEY (who died
before her).

The Wedgwood Society of Boston will not be publishing a newsletter before the next Skinner auction, so we send this along for your info.   

 

Skinner’s European Furniture and Decorative Arts sale held at our Boston gallery on July 9th will once again feature fine and interesting pottery and porcelain. Included is an important collection of Gouda pottery from the Ritvo Collection. Phyllis Ritvo wrote the book The World of Gouda Pottery. As always, there is a fine selection of approximately 180 lots of Wedgwood wares spanning the 250 year production. Featured is a large assortment of black basalt and jasper wares. A nice grouping of Doulton is included, highlighted by a six foot four inch Doulton Lambeth faience decorated vase, the mate if which was exhibited at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. English majolica is well represented and includes a Prometheus Bound vase and cover standing well over four feet in height. Rounding out the highlights is an exceptional selection of Royal Copenhagen’s Flora Danica dinner ware.
Preview days and times: Thursday, July 7th from 12-5pm; Friday July 8th from 12-8pm.

This is Burslem from Grange, a spectacular view of this very old town so much connected with the Potteries. This is the town where Josiah I was baptized. The Backway to Burslem, what a lovely ride! Thank you to Futurilla for making these photos available to those of us who wish we were there!
