Dr Josiah Francis Wedgwood (1950-2009)

I have just read the very sad news that Dr Josiah Francis Wedgwood passed away on November 27th. I corresponded with Dr Wedgwood last year during the fight for control of Josiah Wedgwood & Sons - you may remember I highlighted a letter he had written to the Financial Times on the matter.



The following obituary was published in The Times:

Dr Josiah Francis Wedgwood was a key figure in the US National Institutes of Healths’ (NIH) studies on diseases of the immune system.

He was the chief of the immunodeficiency and immunopathology section at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). He championed the growth of research on primary immunodeficiency diseases (PID) and autoimmunity.

He was also the driving force behind the establishment of USIDNET, a consortium of PID researchers in the US, and pioneered a paradigm shift in funding of clinical research on PID, including the award of grants that led to the discovery of novel genes involved in PID.

He supported strategies to optimise the success of stem cell transplantation and gene therapy for PID and championed the establishment of an NIH registry for patients with PID and a repository of cell lines, tissue and DNA derived from PID patients that is now available to researchers worldwide.

He was in addition a tireless advocate for trainees and nurtured the steady growth of the PID research community through new training programmes.

He was also a key player in NIAID’s programme on autoimmune disease. He was instrumental in the renewal and expansion of the NIAID autoimmunity centres of excellence to include nine academic centres.

He was involved in the design and support of numerous early phase studies of novel therapeutics in diseases such as multiple sclerosis, autoimmune diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, pemphigus vulgaris, and Sjogren’s syndrome. The therapeutic agents under investigation ranged from marketed drugs and biologics to vitamins and novel compounds still in development.

Wedgwood was masterful in bringing together the multidisciplinary teams required to design, implement and conduct such studies. As chair of the trans-NIH Autoimmune Diseases Co-ordinating Committee, he worked closely with representatives of more than 30 federal agencies, private research foundations and patient advocacy groups.

Josiah Francis Wedgwood was born in 1950. He was a direct descendant of the 18th-century founder of the Wedgwood pottery company that introduced black basalt, Jasperware, and bone china to the English trade from 1754. His grandfather, Josiah Wedgwood, directed the firm from 1930 to 1968. His great-grandfather, Josiah Clement Wedgwood, was a Labour MP and a noted parliamentary gadfly, supporting Winston Churchill in sounding the alarm about Nazi aggression and urging that Western countries provide a refuge for Jews fleeing Europe.

The US branch of the Wedgwood family dates to the Second World War. Josiah Clement Wedgwood was targeted for arrest in the event of a Nazi invasion of England, so he sent his children to be educated in the US.

Josiah Francis Wedgwood graduated magna cum laude from Harvard, where he took his PhD in biochemistry in 1978 for studies on the role of phosphorus in cell membrane transport. He received his MD in 1980 from George Washington University Medical School. He then served on the academic faculties of the Mount Sinai Medical Centre in New York and the Yale School of Medicine.

He was board-certified in paediatrics, paediatric immunology and infectious diseases, neonatology and perinatology. He was a member of the American Academy of Paediatrics and received the academy’s Basil O’Connor award. He was the primary author of numerous articles in medical journals and chapters on neonatology, immunology and paediatric infectious diseases.

Wedgwood is survived by his wife of 27 years, Ruth Wedgwood, the Burling Professor of International Law at the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, and the US member of the UN Human Rights Committee, and by their son. The immediate cause of his death was given as cardiovascular collapse.

Dr Josiah Francis Wedgwood, physician and expert on diseases of the immune system, was born on February 1, 1950. He died on November 27, 2009, aged 59

THE WEDGWOODS AND THE DARWINS - THE MARRIAGE OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY Sunday 15th November 2009

A symposium to be held at the Wedgwood Museum - Winner of The Art Fund Prize and Museum of the Year 2009

The voyage of the Beagle took Charles Darwin to the other side of the Earth, seeking answers to the mystery of man's origins. Yet so often, his questions would lead him back to Staffordshire, to the land of his grandfathers, Josiah Wedgwood and Erasmus Darwin, and to intense discussions with his Wedgwood kin.

At the end of a year in which Darwin's bicentenary and the 150th anniversary of 'Origins' have caused this modest giant of science to be examined, the Wedgwood Museum-Winner of the Art Fund Prize and Museum of the Year 2009 - presents a symposium illustrating the evolution of the relationship between the Wedgwoods and the Darwins.

11.00am My favourite Aesculapius Gaye Blake Roberts, Director of the Wedgwood Museum, discusses the beginnings of the relationship between the Wedgwoods and the Darwins and the friendship between Josiah Wedgwood and Erasmus Darwin.

11.45am "...No blue-printed plates like mine in Staffordshire." Lynn Miller, Wedgwood Museum Information Officer, assesses this statement by Josiah ll with reference to the Darwin waterlily pattern and other botanical prints of the early 19th century.

2.00pm "Get up your steam and have a ramble in Wales." Museum Archivist, Kevin Salt illustrates Charles Darwin's sorties into Snowdonia from boyhood to old age.

White Salt-Glazed Stoneware of the British Isles is the first book on salt-glazed stoneware since 1971. This book is the first to cover salt-glazed production in the whole of the British Isles, not simply the production in Staffordshire.

Beginning with the introduction of salt-glazed stoneware into England by German and Dutch potters in the mid-seventeenth century, and John Dwight's patent of 1672, this book goes on to discuss in detail early industrial stoneware, the manufacture from raw materials to producing and decorating the pots, to marketing and distribution, and even the history of collecting salt-glazed stoneware. There is a chapter on the American market and the final chapter identifies, for the first time, a number of manufacturers who produced salt-glazed stoneware, attributions made possible by the excavations of pottery sites. Beyond that, there are five invaluable appendices with details of all manufacturers of salt-glazed stoneware identified thus far, price lists from the eighteenth century and an extensive bibliography.

Diana Edwards is a highly-respected name in the field of ceramics and is the author of numerous books on the subject such as Black Basalt and English Dry-bodied Stoneware (with Rodney Hampson), also published by the Antique Collectors' Club.

Rodney Hampson, an independent ceramic historian, has written four books as well as numerous articles and in-depth special studies on Potteries subjects. He was formerly Research Fellow in Ceramic History at Keele University and Joint Editor of the Journal of the Northern Ceramic Society.

Darwin biopic to launch at Toronto Film Festival

From the BBC, July 15^th.

A British drama about scientist Charles Darwin has been selected to launch this year's Toronto Film Festival.

Creation, which stars real-life couple Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connolly as Darwin and his wife Emma, will open the event on 10 September.

The release of the partly BBC-funded film - out in the UK on 25 September - coincides with the 200th anniversary of the evolution pioneer's birth.

The Toronto Film Festival runs until 29 September in Canada's economic capital.

Directed by Jon Amiel, Creation explores how Darwin came to write his groundbreaking work On the Origins of Species.

The film shows the young scientist grapple with his wife's deep religious convictions and his grief over the death of his young daughter.

PRAISE TRUST: Mike Wolfe's praise for the staff, building and success of the Wedgwood museum is surely appreciated by all involved.

I'd like to add one caveat, which heaps even more praise on the trust, museum team and Gaye Blake-Rogers for their extreme foresight and diligence, but decidedly less on the old Waterford Wedgwood management.

The Wedgwood Collection, the archives and artefacts were actually put into a trust before Waterford took over in 1988, so let's not thank the old board for their one kind act, this was something the Wedgwood family, who had donated many of the artefacts for safe-keeping over the last century, worked very hard to make happen.

Waterford Wedgwood and its Irish owners would certainly have sold off the contents if Josiah Wedgwood and Sons Ltd owned them, just as they have attempted with other collections. We, in the Wedgwood family, are absolutely thrilled at the success of the museum. My father Alan Wedgwood has been deeply saddened by the turn of events in Stoke and the one thing he has put his all into has been the museum. My grandfather's trust the C.T Wedgwood Trust, (although of course he was called Tom because we're not very original with names), helped fund the initial feasibility studies to attract the Heritage Lottery Funding – for this we are proud, and the museum is set to thank the family with a Tom Wedgwood reading room to honour the trust.

Be assured that the Wedgwood family will never desert Wedgwood, its collections nor those Stoke- based employees and ex-employees.

The "Wedgwood Family Worldwide" site was set up back in 1996- hosted free by Geocities. In 1999 Yahoo, who took Geocities over some years ago announced that they would be closing down this facility. A new home had to be found. I have to admit at this point that hasty action on my part seems to have led to the loss of some of the old content as well. Much of it – Biographies etc – will be migrated to the new site at http://www.familyhistorian.info in due course. The Wedgwood Genealogical charts will not be carried over since they have in the most part been superseded by Philip Richards' comprehensive database which is now hosted here: http://www.familyhistorian.info/exciting.

Wedgwood Museum scoops The Art Fund Prize for museums and galleries

Art Fund Press Release: 18/6/09 Museum celebrating iconic name of British ceramics claims £100,000 Prize Internationally renowned collection covers 250 years of British creative, social and manufacturing history. Win reaffirms Stoke-on-Trent's position at the heart of one of the UK's principal manufacturing traditions The Wedgwood Museum in Stoke-on-Trent tonight won the £100,000 Art Fund Prize for museums and galleries. The prize was announced by Chair of Judges, David Puttnam, at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London. The judges, who included artist Grayson Perry and mathematician Marcus du Sautoy, described themselves as 'bowled over' by the museum. They praised the way it uses its internationally-renowned collection to take visitors on a 250-year tour of British social, design and industrial history, while remaining firmly embedded in the local community. David Puttnam commented: "This Museum is extraordinary for so many reasons and we were all but unanimous in our decision. This year the public was also a judge in the first ever People's Choice poll. Over 27,000 people voted on guardian.co.uk, also choosing The Wedgwood Museum as their clear winner. Owned and run by an independent charitable trust, the new £10 million museum is housed on the historic manufacturing site of Josiah Wedgwood and Sons, and tells the story of one of the world's most recognisable consumer brands. Visitors to the museum not only see ceramics but also a range of manuscripts, documentation, factory equipment, original models and fine art related to this world-renowned ceramics company. Three other outstanding museums were shortlisted for the Art Fund Prize: Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow, for its Centre of New Enlightenment; Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham and Ruthin Craft Centre in North Wales. In addition to the cheque for £100,000, The Wedgwood Museum will also receive the Art Fund Prize Bowl, enamelled in silver by the craftsman Vladimir Böhm, which they can display for one year. The Art Fund Prize for museums and galleries recognises and stimulates originality and excellence in museums and galleries and aims to increase public appreciation and enjoyment of all they have to offer.
